The University:
Our vision is a Student and Academic Services division actively creating, promoting, and sustaining a diverse living and learning environment in which each student is challenged, encouraged, and supported in pursuit of academic and personal growth and participation in the community at-large. We envision an academic community where freedom with responsibility exists as a communal as well as an individual value. As students, faculty, and staff pursue their own development, they do so in full recognition and acknowledgment of their membership in a learning community. In endeavors the community undertakes, individuals collaborate with others to achieve objectives that are greater than could be achieved by the individual alone.

Cornell awarded the nation's first university degree in veterinary medicine and first doctorates in electrical engineering and industrial engineering. It awarded the world's first degree in journalism (and taught the first university course in that subject), and established the first four-year schools of hotel administration and industrial and labor relations. Cornell also endowed the nation's first professorships in American history, musicology, and American literature. It was the first U.S. university to teach a course in American history, and the first to offer a major in American studies.
