The University:
The Graduate School of the University of New Orleans continues to grow both in numbers of students and advanced degree programs.
Graduate students comprise one quarter of the University's student body, which numbers over 16,000. Currently, 51programs leading to master's
and doctoral degrees are available to qualified students. Concomitant with the increase in students and programs is a dramatic rise in academic
research activity. Faculty productivity is at all time high and annual funding secured from extramural grants and contracts totals more than
$35 million. Quality of faculty,
diversity of degree programs, reasonable fees and opportunities for student support through research grants are reasons for attaining a standard
of 4,000 graduate students and maintaining that level for the past six years.
The mission of The Graduate School is to provide programs that are of high quality and interest to the residents of the Greater New Orleans
Metropolitan area. The University of New Orleans is an urban institution and a member of the Great Cities Universities. There is a strong
commitment to attract students from other states and countries in order to enrich the cultural diversity and environment of the University,
promote New Orleans, and to reflect the cosmopolitan nature of the city. The highest priority is given to the support and promotion of the
University's doctoral programs. This is consistent with both University of New Orleans and Louisiana Board of Regents initiatives. In the
past four years, the University has committed more than $1.2 million to doctoral programs in enhancement funds, scholarships and new assistantships.
The Ph.D. programs in Financial Economics, Political Science, Education, Engineering and Applied Sciences, Chemistry, Conservation Biology,
Psychology, and Urban Studies have produced an average of well over 50 graduates the past three years, including a high of 63 in 1999-00.
