The University:
Graduate and professional education at the University of Southern California prepares students for leadership in research, teaching, the application
of knowledge and professional practice. Excellence in graduate and professional education is critically dependent on the interaction of faculty
members and students. The values that characterize these interactions include dedication to excellence, mutual respect, fairness, collegiality,
honesty, and integrity. Perhaps what distinguishes us most is our innovative undergraduate curriculum that integrates liberal and professional
learning. At USC undergraduates can pursue degrees in the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, as well as in our 17 professional schools
and schools of the arts. The university offers 101 different minorsthe broadest array of any United States universityand encourages
students to develop "breadth with depth" by studying in widely separated fields.
Los Angeles was little more than a frontier town in 1880 when USC first
opened its doors to 53 students and 10 teachers. Then, the "city" still lacked paved streets, electric lights, telephones and a
reliable fire alarm system. Today, USC is located at the heart of one of the biggest metropolises in the world and is home to over 28,800
students and 3,800 faculty. Explore the timeline to discover the history of the oldest independent teaching and research university in the
West.
