The College:
Occidental College is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the West. Founded in 1887, the College has been
at its present location in the northeastern Los Angeles community of Eagle Rock since 1914. We recruit nationally and internationally for
students searching for an outstanding liberal arts education while pursuing their own personal and intellectual goals. Occidental is consistently
ranked in the top tier of nationally recognized selective liberal arts colleges. We are also proud that we have been ranked first in the nation
in diversity by US News and World Report. Occidental was cited by Change Magazine as a national leader in combining research with teaching
and learning to enhance undergraduate education.
The current student body numbers approximately 1800 students with a student faculty ratio of 12 to 1. The College is served by 142 full-time
faculty members who are outstanding teachers and scholars. The curriculum consists of majors in 20 departments, interdisciplinary majors in
11 areas and combined-plan programs in liberal arts and engineering with Columbia University and Caltech. Our mission exemplifies that Occidental
College is a deeply committed learning community.
